The Therapists' Reactions to the Elderly

Abstract
Using review, peer supervision, and introspection, the authors researched their reactions to elderly patients while leading a newcomers' group in a retirement home. The reactions, or countertransference, to the elderly in this situation encompassed sexual feelings, as well as the lack of these feelings, being “boys” to very elderly women, and providing medical treatment to avoid complex psychological concerns. These issues can be expected to prevail when workers and the elderly interact in a variety of helping situations.
