Swarming behavior of the hyperiid amphipod Anchylomera blossevilli

Abstract
Swarms of the hyperiid amphipod Anchylomera blossevilli were observed underwater on 10 August 1982 off the Kona coast of Hawaii. The amphipod swarms exhibited unique behavior, that included the formation of tornado-shaped swirls which formed at the surface from which tightly massed batches of individuals drifted to deeper depths. The swarms were monospecific with a sex ratio of 0.42 male:female; 19% of the females were bearing eggs. The physical, chemical or biological basis for this swarming was not ascertained.
