Patient Care Research: Report of a Symposium

Abstract
A preliminary survey was made of sociocultural and social psychological problems in the behavior of individuals and groups in relation to sickness and health, including questions of the processes which affect relationships between professional groups and the public (communities, families, and other social groups), relationships between individual professionals and their patients, or the functioning of organized patient care services. Quality of patient care and the diagnostic process also are discussed in this context. Seven broad areas of patient care research were identified, and problems and questions which need further study in each of these areas are noted. An integrative framework for research on the varied problems in this field is reported to be needed.
