Abstract
A survey of all disciplinary cases in a major industry employing 18,000 individuals, during a 31-mos.'' period, revealed that 1% involved the use of intoxicants. During the same period the annual avg. days of absence per alcoholic employee was 26. Of 43 alcoholics discharged during the period the avg. number of days lost annually had been 31. The amts. of absenteeism, impaired efficiency, accidents, lowered morale and disciplinary problems due to excessive drinking cannot be gauged precisely by the means now available. In the industry surveyed, procedures for diagnosis and treatment have been set up for alcoholic employees. The procedures, including techniques of gaining cooperation of supervisory personnel, are described in detail. Keywords
