Abstract
INTESTINAL obstruction of the newborn infant is a surgical emergency, and an effort should be made to determine the cause before surgical exploration. The accuracy of preoperative diagnosis varies. Gross1 believes that with the aid of all available information, including a history, family history, physical examination and x-ray studies, a correct diagnosis may be made preoperatively in 70 to 80 per cent of such cases. Of special interest are the few cases diagnosed as ileal atresia treated successfully by surgery, in whom the typical picture of cystic fibrosis of the pancreas develops later in life.
