Abstract
An incidence and prevalence study was conducted to obtain epidemiologic data as a basis for expanding a rehabilitation program for children. The project attempted to identify each case of long-term disease diagnosed during 1946 to 1961 in children under age 16. Hospital charts medical specialists'' office records, school records and the vital records of New York state contributed to the study data. Home interviews were conducted among parents of a sample of the recorded cases to determine the effect of each disease on the child and his family and to define the associated problems of care and social and academic adjustment. The incidence of cystic fibrosis of the pancreas is presented as an example of the case-finding technic; the incidence of cystic fibrosis in Erie County is 1/2,500 live births. This publication has 13 references indexed in Scilit:
