INTERMITTENT PRECOCIOUS BREAST DEVELOPMENT ASSOCIATED WITH MILD BRONCHITIS*

Abstract
The case is presented of a 4-year-old girl who experienced periodic episodes of mammary enlargement and slight genital precocity with hypersecretion of gonadotropin and estrogen, during attacks of mild respiratory infection. When in good health the patient did not present any evidence of unusual elaboration of estrogen, and the earlier manifestations of precocious sexual development subsided. A review of the association of pulmonary diseases with gynecomastia is presented. The possible causes of such mammary development are discussed, based upon the premise that the stimulus for the development originates in the lungs. The hormonal changes following this stimulus and the sensitivity of the breasts to these factors are also considered.
