Abstract
An analysis of current knowledge of the chemical reactions and the simultaneously occurring morphological changes in the conversion of PAN-based precursor fibres to carbon fibres is presented. This is discussed in the context of the evolution of the mechanical properties of carbon fibres. Needs that remain unfulfilled and the potential mechanisms for accomplishing them are also discussed briefly. Keywords
