Abstract
Growth of bacteria in fresh water stored in glass containers occurs in the body of the water and on the surface of the glass. It is the latter organisms that are responsible for higher counts obtained if a sample is withdrawn after vigorous shaking. Bacterial growth was found to be stimulated by storage of water in containers of Bohemian glass and measuring cylinders, but not in Pyrex or fused silica, indicating that soluble chemical substances in the walls of the container were responsible. Keywords
