COMPARISON OF FLICKER PERIMETRY AND STANDARD VISUAL FIELDS IN BRAIN-DAMAGED PATIENTS1

Abstract
A quantitative method for identifying visual impairment associated with brain-damage, based on plotting visual fields by means of thresholds for a flickering light, has been developed. Comparison was made of inferences independently derived from the above method and from standard visual fields in 50 brain-damaged patients as regards the questions: abnormal or normal visual fields and if abnormal, central or peripheral? The flicker perimetry index indicated 82% of the patients had abnormal visual fields; 80% were judged as centrally determined. A Board Ophthalmologist interpreting the standard visual fields declared 50% to have abnormal fields and 16% to be centrally determined. Both sets of statements were made independently of the case history.
