Abstract
Ergonomics is shown to be a discipline centred around the development of man—machine systems. The major stages of the developmental process are the interpretation of system requirements, their transformation into implementing mechanisms, the conceptualization of design alternatives and the application of criteria in trade-offs among the alternatives. This process has significantly influenced behavioural methodology, research problems and data needs. Although the discipline has had only partial success in dealing with system development problems, procedures originally developed for military systems can be applied with some modification to civilian products and systems. Keywords
