Abstract
Synopsis: A method is presented for determining the species composition by weight of a two‐component forage mixture when the two components contain different concentrations of a given constituent. It consists of measuring the constituent concentration of a large sample from each plot and the species components from small samples taken at random from plots treated alike. Species composition of the large sample is then computed using appropriate formulae. The use of dry matter, calcium and crude protein to estimate botanical composition was investigated. The method was found to be more efficient than hand separation. Keywords
