Abstract
Acknowledged chaos isa sign of a crisis state. It is not that disorder, confusion, and impasse have suddenly appeared in psychotherapy. They have been there for some time. What is new is public acknowledgement of this crisis state brought about by a willingness to face the facts and to seek help. Candidness is now being added to honesty. Both psychology and psychiatry are subjecting themselves to searching criticism. Help will come from research but not much more can be expected from normal research. Normal research consists of mopping up within a paradigm. With current paradigms failing, a transition must be made to extraordinary research. During the transition period, therapists as practitioners have no choice but to work within their familiar paradigm. But for investigators, a crisis means a critical decision point. It is time to halt and question every assumption. It is time for a new paradigm to emerge as a response to crisis and to be given a hearing. This publication has 9 references indexed in Scilit:
