Abstract
The use of structured light techniques for obtaining three dimensional measurements of printed circuit board assemblies is examined, and a particular application for calculating the volume of solder paste that has been applied to each pad is described. The optical configuration for projecting parallel lines of light is discussed, along with machine vision algorithms for obtaining the volume measurement. By interpreting the translation of the lines with respect to a known reference point, a series of data points can be collected and used to estimate the total volume of the sample. Further investigation is made into the accuracy of the measurement, and techniques for applying LCD devices within the projection apparatus. It is concluded that these capabilities will allow for the accurate measure of solder paste volume within the manufacturing environment. Keywords
