Abstract
The c/a ratios of the hexagonal AlN and BeO structures show that they do not have a regularly tetrahedral distribution of bonds. The structural details have been studied by x‐ray analysis and are discussed in relation to the concepts of the electronegativity and electroneutrality of atoms. This gives a basis for an understanding of the distribution of the wurtzite and zinc blende lattices in the binary compounds of the group III/V and II/VI elements. Keywords
