Abstract
An improved letkocyte culturing technique is described for the domestic horse that provides numerous elongated chromosomes. By using this method, a high resolution karyotype and idiogram was prepared that provides a marked increase in the linear differentiation of horse chromosomes. The domestic horse karyotype contains many small acrocentric and biarmed chromosomes that are difficult to differentiate by utilizing conventional G-band metaphase chromosome techniques. The proposed high-resolution karyotype contains a 2-fold increase in the number of bands over previously described horse karyotypes, and all chromosomes can be unequivocally identified. The proposed karyotype divides the autosomes in order of descending size into two groups: biarmed and acrocentric chromosomes. This delineation has greater utility in working with elongated chromosomes and departs from the traditional method of placing the autosomes into four groups. This publication has 3 references indexed in Scilit:
