Abstract
A general theory of the diffraction by gratings is applied to gratings with a sinusoidal profile (of interest since the advent of holographic techniques in grating production), and also to gratings with a triangular profile. Particular application is made to S -polarization anomalies, where good agreement is obtained with experimental observations. Two new phenomena, namely (i) a power-law relation between resonance anomaly bandwidth and grating amplitude, and (ii) the transference of Wood anomalies between two orders, are reported. Also, a new theoretical insight into the form of a peculiar type of double anomaly for a triangular-profile grating, as observed by Wood [18] and Strong [19], is reported. Keywords
