Abstract
Frequency response data constitute a good basis for transfer function synthesis when using appropriate techniques for frequency response approximation. Not all of the numerous existing methods yield excellent results. Whitfield (1986) discussed various methods with the aid of examples. His statement that the frequency approximation technique of Stahl (1984) often yields divergent results is only correct when using the iterative matrix adaptation method in conjunction with the least-squares cost function. However, applying the direct solution method as introduced by Stahl (1984)all the approximation results of Whitfield (1986) can be improved. Keywords
