Abstract
The authors present a quark-antiquark potential in which the connection between the strength and the range of the hyperfine interaction is consistent with the Fermi-Breit correction to the Coulomb potential. They compare their theoretical S-wave meson spectra with experiment and with those reported by Bhaduri et al. (1981). the limitations of the harmonic oscillator variational method to solve the corresponding Schrodinger equation are also discussed. Keywords
