Abstract
The coherent production of pions in a proton nucleus collision is calculated. The energy region considered is below the nucleon‐nucleon threshold so that the entire nucleus must take part in the process. The amplitude for this reaction is broken into two parts, the first part being characterized by initial emission of the pion from the projectile and the second part by initial emission from the target nucleus. It is the second part which is emphasized in this talk. The target nuclei 12C and 209Bi are considered. Total production cross sections as a function of energy and some angular distributions are calculated. Keywords
