Abstract
Carotene in oil given daily for 15 days and representing as many as 3750 international units of vitamin A prevented directly or indirectly a normal vaginal smear picture. Control rats that had received only the normal diet showed a normal oestrous cycle throughout the investigation. Control rats given cottonseed oil and corn oil also exhibited a normal vaginal picture as observed by the smear technic. Carotene in large amounts produced a rapid growth of the epithelium for a period of approximately 30 days. This was indicated by the large number of young nucleated epithelial cells which predominated in the vaginal smears. Keywords
