The Physiological Basis for Psychosomatic Medicine

Abstract
[long dash]This paper traces and compares the development of the concepts underlying classical pathophysiology and the psychosomatic approach. The relevance of the contributions of Bernard and Cannon are examined in detail. A number of pathophysiological hypotheses basic to current psychosomatic thinking are criticized. It is concluded that psychosomatic research has been handicapped as much by gaps in physiological knowledge as by the inadequacies of psychological hypotheses. Tentative suggestions for future research approaches are offered.
