Abstract
THE functional role of zinc has been investigated in experimental systems of varying biologic complexity.1 In previous investigations in this laboratory, the analysis of highly purified enzymes has resulted in the detection of zinc in several dehydrogenases and in carboxypeptidase.2 3 4 5 Two of these, alcohol dehydrogenase and glutamic dehydrogenase, are crystallized from liver,6 , 7 where they occur in subcellular fractions.8 These fractions contain considerable quantities of zinc.9 Chemical, kinetic and spectroscopic studies have shown that zinc is an active enzymatic site in these enzymes, and that its presence is indispensable to their activity.10 , 11 The assessment of these biochemical findings in terms of . . .Keywords
