The Evanston Dental Caries Study

Abstract
The present report compares prefluoride caries experience of the 6-, 7- and 8-yr.-old Evanston school children with the caries experience of the same age group who were examined 12 to 22 mos. following the fluoridation of the communal water. The data were analyzed by approved statistical methods. The postfluoride period showed an increase in the caries experience for deciduous teeth of the 6- and 8-yr.-old children; an overall lowering of the decayed, missing and filled rates for all permanent teeth, as well as a reduction in the caries experience of occlusal surfaces of first permanent molars; an increase in the number of occlusal surfaces of first permanent molars free from caries or fillings except in the 6-yr.-old group; a reduction in the caries rate for maxillary and mandibular permanent teeth; and a reduction in the number of precarious lesions. The authors conclude that these data indicated reduction in the caries prevalence in the permanent teeth of the 6-, 7-, and 8-yr.-old school children and that the effect may be assumed to be greater on the permanent teeth than on the deciduous teeth.
