Abstract
In one of 2 studies reported the beginning of cambial growth was detd. for 17 spp of temperate zone trees over a period of 3 yrs. In another study simultaneous observations were made on individuals of 3 spp. of conifers growing at different altitudes on the same mountain. The only data indicating temp. control of diameter growth were those for Robinia pseudoacacia, which grew only when nocturnal minimal temps. did not fall below -1.1[degree]C. In most spp. growth begins at a rather well-defined period suggestive of photo-periodism. On the mountain trees began growing simultaneously even though temp. conditions and melting of snow exhibited a 6-weeks lag at high elevations. A table of known minimal threshold air temps. is given.
