Familial Cerebello‐Olivary Degeneration with Late Development of Rigidity and Dementia

Abstract
A family is described in which several members developed a profound disturbance of stance and equilibration followed by progressive rigidity and dementia. The father apparently transmitted this disease, since he developed a similar condition at the age of 44. Post-mortem examination showed profound cerebellar atrophy with degeneration in the olivary nuclei and substantia nigra. The interrelationships of the cerebellar degenerations are discussed.
