Abstract
Measurements of the infra-red emission by the vibrationally excited H2O molecules produced in the quenching of O2(1Σ+ g) show that kinetic studies of this species in discharge-flow experiments have been significantly affected by traces of water in the supposedly dry oxygen used. A redetermination of the rate coefficient for the quenching of O2(1Σ+ g) by ground state O2 allowing for this effect yields (2.8 ± 0.8)× 104 dm3 mol–1 s–1. Rate coefficients of 2.8 × 109 and 2.4 × 108 dm3 mol–1 s–1 for quenching by H2O and H2 are confirmed. Keywords
