FOLATE STATUS IN A GERIATRIC POPULATION AND ITS RELATION TO DEMENTIA

Abstract
Anaemia was present in 20 per cent of 113 consecutive admissions to a geriatric unit. This was microcytic in 8 per cent and macrocytic in 11 per cent. Sixteen per cent of patients had folate deficiency (low red-cell folate). Fourteen patients with dementia had significantly lower red-cell folate levels (mean 279 ng/ml) than the group as a whole (mean 394 ng/ml).
