SUBTHRESHOLD DIABETES

Abstract
Diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease which may exist in a preclinical state, free of symptomatology and obvious biochemical and metabolic abnormalities. Important clues are found in the history and family history. Other diagnostic indicators are neuropathies, certain ophthalmic lesions, obesity, dermatologic conditions, hepatic enlargement and degenerative vascular disease. The biologic process which leads to acceleration of degeneration in diabetes mellitus does not parallel that of failure of carbohydrate metabolism. Nevertheless, poor chemical control of carbohydrate metabolism does appear to influence degenerative changes. The therapy of diabetes mellitus can be eminently satisfactory when recognition is early and effective nutritional therapy instituted and maintained throughout life.
