Abstract
A viscometer for measurement of sputum viscosity is described. The apparatus allowed continuous measurement of sputum samples [human] from 5-50 ml in volume. It was calibrated against capillary and rotation viscometers with excellent correlation. The recordings obtained from sputum impressively displayed the heterogeneity of this material. It was possible to calculate a mean viscosity and plot the distribution of viscosities in total sputum volume. Some practical examples of the use of the viscometer were given and the relationship between this instrument and other types of viscometers discussed.
