Abstract
Bovine microcrystalline collagen preparations are reported to be effective topical hemostatic agents. These collagen preparations shorten the clotting time of native blood. Platelets adhere to the microcrystalline collagen and appear to undergo the release reaction producing aggregation of nearby platelets. The hemostatic action of these collagen preparations appears to be exerted through their effects on platelets rather than through direct effects on soluble components of the intrinsic blood coagulation system.
