Abstract
Translation of the foot and mouth disease virus genome in vitro and in vivo indicated that all seven serotypes initiate protein synthesis at two separate AUGs. Sequence analysis of the region surrounding these AUGs has shown that the efficiency with which the initiating AUG is recognised is dependant on the flanking nucleotides. However, in vitro, the major factor determing which AUG is used is the concentration of Mg2+.Keywords
