Abstract
Eighty-eight chronic carriers (40 of Salmonella typhi and 48 of Salmonella paratyphi B) with a duration of carrier state from two to 50 years were treated with trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, two tablets twice daily. Sixty-four carriers were given a three months' course of treatment; 34 of them have now been followed for one year, during which the 24 stool samples from each patient that were examined bacteriologically remained negative. In 18 patients the followup period is less than one year. Twenty-two patients are still receiving treatment. Twelve carriers relapsed after cessation of therapy: 11 during the first five weeks and one in the ninth month. Four carriers experienced an urticarial rash; treatment was discontinued in three of them. Red and white blood cell counts, differential, and platelet counts, which were made fortnightly during treatment, remained normal as did the blood tests of liver and kidney function. Keywords
