To the Editor: I believe caution is needed in extrapolating the results of Clark et al. (March 9 issue)1 to other laboratories and applying them in patient care. Although these authors found that measuring the percentage of cells in S phase was helpful in predicting survival in patients with diploid Stage I breast carcinoma, their cutoff value between high and low S phases — 6.7 percent — may not be applicable at other laboratories.The percentage of cells in S phase in solid tumors is difficult to measure meaningfully, and its measurement depends particularly on the computer software used.2 The . . .
