Abstract
A striking decrease in the blood CD4+ lymphocyte count is considered to be a reliable sign of the progression of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) type 1 infection, and profound CD4+ lymphocytopenia is usually associated with severe manifestations of opportunistic infections in HIV-infected patients. Several other infectious diseases are known to induce a state of immunodeficiency, sometimes associated with lymphocytopenia. In this report we describe a patient with visceral leishmaniasis who had a favorable outcome, despite severe lymphocytopenia (53X 106 per liter). Keywords
