Abstract
Frequency of morphological abnormalities in ayu from the Yahagi River [Japan] was .apprx. 0.15%; 442 hatchery-reared ayu showed a rate of 70.14%. The incidence of shortened vertebrae and fused vertebrae in hatchery-reared ayu were significantly higher than in natural populations. The types of malformations occurring in hatchery-reared fish were more numerous than in natural populations.
