What Docks the Tails of Radio Source Components?

Abstract
The components of powerful extragalactic radio sources show a characteristic head–tail structure. If synchrotron losses play a major part in limiting the lengths of the tails, the tails should be longer at low frequencies than at high frequencies. New observations of 3C 172 indicate that such differences are not observed, and this conclusion is consistent with published data on other sources.
