The Application of Probability to Tolerances Used in Engineering Designs

Abstract
The paper examines the nature of variations in the dimensions of components produced by manufacturing processes; this examination leads to the development of design formulae for the selection of tolerances based on the probability theory. Studies in dimensional variations of actual assemblies are given and these are compared with the limits predicted from the theory.
