Abstract
In his regular monthly column. James Buchan suggests that the future role of agency staff working for the National Health Service is unclear The use of agency nurses in the NHS declined in 1990 after steadily increasing during the Eighties. The main reason was financial constraints, particularly in inner-London health authorities. Agencies will be asking themselves whether this downturn is a statistical hiccup or the beginning of a trend of decline.
