Abstract
SMC proteins regulate key chromosomal events during cell division. In their Perspective, Milutinovich and Koshland discuss several papers published here ( Kitajima et al.) and elsewhere that elucidate how SMC proteins, in complexes with their binding partners, bind to chromatin to carry out their many functions.Keywords
