Abstract
The concept of "rigidity" has proved valuable for the analysis of behavior in genetic, comparative, and abnormal psychology. Confusion in its use will be obviated if it is defined functionally, as sluggishness in variation of response. It should be distinguished from structural organization, stability, and differentiation of personality. Furthermore, there are qualitative variations in rigidity. Keywords
