Abstract
Investigations of 2 basic traps and 60 different attractants for the apple maggot, Rhagoletis pomonella (Walsh), were conducted in neglected apple orchards in Door County, Wisconsin, during 1961 and 1962. A yellow sticky-board type trap with attached bait jar was the most effective trap and Staley's Insecticide Bait No. 2® (a protein hydrolysate) was the best bait attractant, followed by full-strength household ammonia. A mature darkred Winesap apple was more effective than any of the bait or chemical attractants on the basis of unit area of trapping surface, cost, maintenance, and case of operation. Red was the most attractive color. Deadline® was an efficient tacky substance for coating the yellow sticky-board and Winesap apple to trap the adults.
