Abstract
Dr. Nicholas J. Fiumara, director of the Division of Communicable Diseases of the Massachusetts Department of Public Health and author of an article* on the subject published in the Journal last year, has recorded in a report issued for the fiscal year 1958 a disturbing, continuous rise in the syphilis rates for Massachusetts. According to this report cases have increased by 9 per cent over the previous year, with a 15 per cent increase of those in the infectious stages. Massachusetts, however, is not unique in experiencing this predicted rise, for the rates in the Commonwealth reflect the national average . . .
