Abstract
In inbred lines of rye (S. cereale L.) a close negative correlation was found between mean chiasma number and their between-cell variance. No correlation was detected between mean ciasma number or chiasma variance and the positional distribution of chiasmata within the bivalents, i.e., terminal or interstitial. While the between-cell variance of chiasmata is a direct consequence of the mean chiasma frequency, the positional distribution of chiasmata within bivalents is probably subject to an independent control system.
