Abstract
The kinetic lattice-gas model for an open system of adsorbed particles is used to derive a hierarchy of coupled equations that represent a time-dependent generalization of the grand-canonical ensemble. This formulation is particularly useful to describe adsorption, desorption, and diffusion in inhomogeneous systems, such as adsorbates with attractive lateral interactions within the coexistence regime. Keywords
