Abstract
In this paper we rederive the Rice—Allnatt kinetic equation and show that, for the soft‐force part of the interaction, the constant friction‐coefficient Fokker—Planck operator is the first approximation to a more complex operator. This more complex operator is of the general Fokker—Planck form, but has momentum‐dependent friction coefficients. The operator derived herein is identical with the operator obtained from the Prigogine theory in the weak coupling limit. The consistency between the Rice—Allnatt analysis of transport in liquids and the exact perturbation analysis of Prigogine is examined, as is the internal consistency of the Rice‐Allnatt analysis. At present, there appear to be no inconsistencies between the two theories. Keywords
