Isolation and Psychosocial Functioning

Abstract
The subject of this study is the relationship between social isolation from family and from friends and social functioning, personality characteristics, and symptomatology. Social isolation from family and from friends of 142 subjects being admitted to the adult out-patient and in-patient services at a large mental health facility was measured by two scales of the Denver Community Mental Health Questionnaire. Level of social functioning, personality characteristics, and symptomatology were measured by the Denver Questionnaire, the Mini-Mult, and the Taylor Manifest Anxiety Scale. A strong association was found between isolation and impairment in social functioning.
