Abstract
The hydrography of Lough Ine, Ireland, is greatly in fluenced by the narrow Rapids which connect it with the sea. Investi gations were carried out during summer by means of water samples, temperature measurements, depth floats, and fluorescein. In July there is a discontinuity of temperature, pH, and O2 saturation at about 25 m., with stagnant water below. During inflow the inrushing water sets up a powerful deeply extending vortex in the south basin, and there is much mixing. During outflow the water at the surface streams towards the Rapids from all parts of the south basin; but this movement is very superficial. These differences in water movement during inflow and out flow maintain a rapid replenishment of water in the epilimnion of the south basin, probably approaching 50% in 3 tides. This publication has 4 references indexed in Scilit:
