Abstract
Attempts to identify Oriental Teleogryllus revealed confusion in the literature between the 2 spp. T. mitratus (Burmeister) and T. testaceus (Walker). Gryllus testaceus Walker, 1869 was also a primary homonym of G. testaceus De Geer, 1773. The nomenclature is revised, and reliable characters for distinguishing between these species are discussed. An examination of the type-series of G. mitratus Burmeister showed that this name has been applied to the wrong species of the two. Because of this homonym, the 2nd species, previously known as G. testaceus De Geer, requires a replacement name, and the name G. mitratus, the earliest available name, is applied to it. Two names of equal seniority are available for the 1st species, previously misidentified as mitratus. G. occipitalis Serville is the valid name. Data on the stridulatory files was obtained from replicas made using the method described by Ragge for Tettigoniidae. The mirror length was measured along the longitudinal axis of the fore wing, and the width perpendicular to it. These measurements are dependent not only on the size of the mirror itself, but on its orientation in the fore wing. The width of the pronotum was measured with vernier callipers along the posterior edge, at the point of greatest separation between the lateral lobes; the length was measured along the mid line. The total length of the insect was measured from the front of the head to the tip of the fore wings. This publication has 1 reference indexed in Scilit:
