Treatment of kwashiorkor with opaque-2 maize

Abstract
Children with kwashiorkor were treated with a diet providing 4 g/kg protein and 200 kcal/kg. They were divided into two groups. Ten children received a diet based on opaque-2 maize and twelve other children received a skim milk diet for a period of 4 to 5 weeks. The results indicate that opaque-2 maize is effective in the treatment of kwashiorkor. Both the clinical and biochemical responses observed in children who consumed the maize diet were comparable to those obtained with skim milk. Thus, the nutritive quality of the protein of opaque-2 maize appears to be as good as that of milk protein.
